main index development and aesthetics |
This website documents an artistic and technological development in
the field of media art. It was a compository idea that triggered the development
of the "TopoPhonien" project. The basic idea was to move music
arbitrarily over a network of loudspeakers that can be positioned freely
in space, and thus to realize a new and hopefully exciting form of "Raummusik".
The website shows which innovative artistic and technological ideas were at the foundation and how they evolved into works of art. Thanks to contributions by other authors, who have written associative and reflective texts on the individual subjects, I am lucky enough to be able to present the documentation of my artistic work within an expressive context. I am deeply grateful to the authors for their diverse contributions. The first two chapters offer a description of my own artistic development as well as some general statements on the project and the course it has taken. In the following chapters, the individual works of art that emerged from the "TopoPhonien" project and were realized during the past two years are presented. As you read this documentation, you will notice that interdisciplinary collaboration on many levels plays an important role - in the cooperation with my partner Sukandar Kartadinata on developing the project as well as in the cooperation with the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) on realizing the project or in the artistic field, where cooperation with artists working in other areas of media art, like Werner Cee and Hens Breet, was decisive, enabling the realization of multimedial room installations. Some basic conditions were required in order to realize the artistic idea. They were vital for creating the possibility to experiment and to be able to achieve results that are interesting and useful from the artist's point of view. These conditions include: permanent access to adequate sound equipment; computers to digitally control sounds; a custom-built sound mixer; a large enough room to build life-size sound installations, and a few things more. Institutions and enterprises in and around Karlsruhe have been of great help to me in providing these conditions. With these pages I would like to thank everyone who supported me and enabled me to carry out this project. This website shows how my work could advance thanks to their trust in me. Like the "TopoPhonien" project itself, this website is an example of interdisciplinary collaboration and creative cooperation. I would therefore like to thank the authors who contributed to the diversity of this website - all those who helped me to raise funds for this website - especially the Institute for Computerdesign and Error Tolerance of the University of Karlsruhe. A special thanks goes out to Hens Breet, who directed the artistic design of this documentation. Karlsruhe, March 1997 |
