The installations of Sabine Schäfer not only depend on their technological ingenuity or their compository contents - a major aspect of the concept of three-dimensional music are the phsyical properties of the space in which it is performed. Probably the most suitable of all places to perform music, and the ultimate archetype of western architecture, are church buildings. Apart from being all of that, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Heidelberg is a historic place, which makes it even more a challenge to create a visual atmosphere that does justice to both the musical composition and the room in which it is performed. The lighting design for "The Spiritual Location of Sound" therefore was kept very rudimentary. With the kind assistance of Lars Wolf and Martin Bruckmayer from the company hell begeistert, it was possible to create an environment that took the special character of the old church into account. As in the music, the lighting did not so much try to convey stories of whatever kind, but rather emphasized the specific set-up of the installation, and the way the installation dealt with the architecture. The four loudspeaker-columns were individually lit from above with a soft yellowish light, while the spaces behind them were set in a blueish kind of daylight. The only dynamics in the lighting were established by two rows of plain blue lights on the ceiling, that gently varied intensity during the time of the performance. The nature of the place, the spiritus loqui, did not allow, or even require, anything else to create a contemplative atmosphere. In fact, the space itself inevitably contributed greatly to the feeling that was there, created by the music and the light. And the light of course, the daylight, the twilight and finally the night, make a church the sacred place it is.
